The Bermondsey and Old Southwark Conservative Association is made up of a diverse range of backgrounds, interests and concerns. It is a broad church, which encourages open debate and accepts differences of opinion.
Here's a profile of some of our members:
Laura Collins
I live in Rotherhithe with my partner, Rob, plus our children, 11 year-old Georgina, and Spike, 9. Although I left school at 16, I eventually stumbled into writing and now work as a journalist.
I come from a disadvantaged background and can't stand well-heeled MPs trying to pass themselves off as socialists. I believe Conservative values of hard work and self-reliance help far more than State interference, and leave more resources available for the needy.
Over the past few years the Association has been very successful, not only in its social and campaigning activities, but actually in helping people others have ignored. Sometimes you get the impression that the powers that be are more interested in tinkering with roads than helping the vulnerable.
Rahoul Bhansali
I’ve lived in the constituency for the last 8 years. A technologist by trade, my work sees me implementing solutions to organisations' problems on a daily basis. These skills come in handy with neighbours and friends alike, when you live in such a crowded area as Bermondsey.
In my spare time I enjoy travelling, socialising, playing cricket. I am also a keen consumer of food, be it sushi or pies.
I joined Southwark Conservatives because I’m passionate about the need for local people to be involved in the management of local issues. Riverside ward should have more say in its own affairs with less interference from the town hall.
The really great thing about the Association is the fact that 90% of our membership is between 20 – 35 years old. Whether its just going for a quick drink or canvassing an estate, there’s always a real buzz to what we’re doing.
Fabian Richter
I’m 33 years' old and I work as a management consultant in central London. I’ve lived by the Imperial War Museum for the last 8 years and from 2003 – 2006, I was chairman of the Association.
The reason I became involved in the Conservatives was because I did and still do, feel let down by the other parties and the way they spend hard earned council tax-payers money. Too much effort seems to be spent on recycling ‘prize money’ gimicks rather than actually collecting our green waste.
In my spare time I enjoy walking and cooking for friends - especially when it gives me an excuse to go shopping at the wonderful Borough Market!
