LOCAL CONSERVATIVES
The parliamentary constituency of Bermondsey and Old Southwark, incorporates the communities of Borough, Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Newington and Walworth.
The area includes such attractions as The Imperial War Museum; Tate Modern; Bermondsey Antique and Borough markets; HMS Belfast; Southwark Cathedral; and Brunel’s Rotherhithe Tunnel.
Our local communities derive their strength and character from their history. The area has always been at the heart of London’s commercial development. Today that heritage is apparent in the variety of the built environment: the hustle and bustle around London Bridge Station is in complete contrast to the green suburban nature of the Rotherhithe peninsular. Equally important as the physical environment is the rich mix of cultures and backgrounds which the people of the constituency represent.
CONSERVATIVES WINNING HERE
2008 saw us win three council wards (SURREY DOCKS, RIVERSIDE, SOUTH BERMONDSEY) and come second in the six others as Londoners voted in huge numbers for Boris Johnson as their new Mayor of London and a record number of Conservatives on the Greater London Assembly.
In 2009 local residents again turned out in force to send 3 Conservatives to the European Parliament in Brussels or Strasbourg....
At the next general election if you want change then voting for Loanna Morrison as your next Conservative member of parliament is the only way forward. A vote for the Liberals is a vote for Gordon Brown.
FIGHTING CUTS - SAVING RESIDENTS MONEY
We have several hundred local members of whom 80% are between the ages of 25 and 35. Our vitality and commitment has allowed us to mount active campaigns on issues of concern to local people.
Some of our recent campaigns and successes:
FIGHTING LABOUR CUTS - Attacking the Department for Transport's cutting of services on the South London line - we welcome the support of Harriet Harman MP & Tessa Jowell MP against their own government.
SAVING RESIDENTS MONEY - Freezing the Greater London Assembly levy in the first two years of a Conservative Mayor of London. Forcing the Liberals to freeze Southwark's Council Tax.
IMPROVING POLICING - We continue to campaign for the opening of Rotherhithe Police Station at night and weekends rather than the closure favoured by Labour.
NEW FACILITIES - Thanks to Cllr Lewis Robinson and our team at the Town Hall, the Greenland Dock water sports centre was revamped and Southwark Park is getting a new athletics facility.
NO FUTURE SLUMS - We fought against Ken Livingstone's plans for a return to ill-planned 1960's high rise development and rabbit hutch developments in our part of the capital. We continue to fight on against poorly designed schemes in the constituency such as Barrett's development at Downtown.
In addition to recent campaigns the Association hosts a wide variety of events across the constituency and also away days. Recent visits to meet with members have been made by David Cameron MP; Iain Duncan-Smith MP; Alan Duncan MP; David Lidington MP; Oliver Heald MP and Liam Fox MP.
